Product Description

Classic Short Dwell Ignition

The Classic Short Dwell Ignition is based on the same proven electronic ignition system as the Classic Twin, with a shorter dwell period designed specifically for use with our Digital Mini Coils. The result is a compact ignition system with no external ignition control box, reliable operation and easy starting.

The system has been developed and refined through many years of experience with classic motorcycle ignition systems. It replaces the original points and automatic advance mechanism, with no points or condenser to maintain.

A built-in self-test function allows the ignition system to be checked before the engine is started, while the LED timing indicator makes installation and timing adjustment straightforward.

Starting and running performance

Easy starting was one of the priorities in developing the Classic Short Dwell. The ignition system provides a strong, consistent spark during starting and normal running, helping the engine start cleanly and run smoothly.

The electronic system also eliminates the wear and adjustment associated with mechanical points and the original contact breaker system.

Coils and cylinder configuration

The Classic Short Dwell is supplied with a Tri-Spark Digital Mini Coil matched to the ignition system.

For twin-cylinder engines, the kit includes a Dual Output Digital Mini Coil with two high-tension leads and spark plug caps.

For single-cylinder engines, the kit includes a Single Output Digital Mini Coil with one high-tension lead and spark plug cap.

Select the required cylinder configuration from the options when ordering.

12-volt operation

The Classic Short Dwell operates on a 12-volt electrical system and is suitable for both positive and negative earth/ground motorcycles.

What's included

The Classic Short Dwell Ignition kit includes:

  • Tri-Spark stator unit, replacing the original points plate
  • Tri-Spark trigger rotor, replacing the automatic advance unit and points cam
  • Digital Mini Coil — dual output for twin-cylinder engines or single output for single-cylinder engines
  • High-tension leads and spark plug caps
  • 16-page illustrated installation and instruction booklet
  • Wiring terminals and other hardware required for installation

Compatible motorcycles

The Classic Short Dwell is suitable for a wide range of classic Triumph, Norton, BSA and Enfield motorcycles, including:

  • Triumph unit twins: T100, T120, TR7RV, T140 Bonneville, Tiger and Daytona
  • Norton: Atlas and Commando 1968–75
  • Enfield: Interceptor
  • BSA unit twins: A65 and A50
  • BSA singles: B25, B40, B44 and B50
  • Triumph singles: Tiger Cub

Crankshaft configurations

The standard Classic Short Dwell is designed for parallel-twin engines with a 360-degree crankshaft.

It can also be adapted for engines with an offset crank, including 270-degree configurations, by using our Offset Crank Rotor. When ordering, specify the required crank angle and motorcycle model in the order notes.
