Our Story
Tri-Spark began nearly 20 years ago in Adelaide, South Australia, when our founder, Stephen Kelly, set out to build a better electronic ignition system for the classic motorcycle he had owned since 1986.
How Tri-Spark Got Its Name
People sometimes ask where the name Tri-Spark came from. The answer takes us back to the first ignition Stephen developed for the business, originally designed for his own 1975 Triumph Trident T160.
At first, Stephen wasn't trying to start a business. He simply wanted to craft an ignition system that would make his own bike start more easily, idle more reliably and run better. Existing systems relied on wasted sparks and, too often, left riders frustrated with motorcycles that were difficult to start. Stephen believed these classic machines deserved a fresh approach.
Engineering a Better Ignition
With 20 years of experience designing electronic products for a range of industries, Stephen was ready for the challenge. His goal was to address the shortcomings of existing ignition systems without compromising the character of the motorcycle.
The ignition he created for the T160 generated interest from the beginning. Its sequential firing, fuel-saving advance curve and idle stabilisation helped keep the bike running smoothly, including when waiting at the traffic lights.
