Tri-Spark 6-volt ignition coils use heavier-gauge windings and a high-grade magnetic core to provide strong spark energy and good spark duration. Oil-filled construction provides effective heat transfer and is similar to the construction used in original Lucas-style coils.

6-Volt Ignition Coil – Lucas Style

These Tri-Spark ignition coils are designed for classic motorcycles requiring a 6-volt ignition coil. They use heavier-gauge windings and a high-grade magnetic core to provide strong spark energy and good spark duration.

The coils are oil filled, like the original Lucas-style coils. Oil-filled construction provides good heat transfer and is well suited to the temperature and vibration found in classic motorcycle applications.

Construction

Oil-filled coils have an advantage over epoxy-filled coils when it comes to heat dissipation. Oil transfers heat away from the internal windings more effectively, allowing the heat to move into the coil body and surrounding air.

The oil-filled construction also avoids the internal stresses associated with solid epoxy as temperatures change. The result is a coil that is well suited to the demanding environment of a classic motorcycle.

The Tri-Spark coil has the same 40 mm diameter as the original Lucas 17M12 and 17M6 coils, making it suitable for installations designed around these coils.

High-voltage output

The Tri-Spark 6-volt coil produces a high voltage at the HT output to provide the spark energy required by the engine.

Important: Always have a spark plug connected to the HT output when the ignition is switched on or the engine is being cranked. Never operate the coil with the HT output disconnected, as the resulting high voltage can damage the ignition system or coil.

Compatibility with Classic Twin Ignition

The IGC-1006 is suitable for the following motorcycles when used with the Tri-Spark Classic Twin Ignition:

  • BSA twins: A50, A65, B50
  • Norton Commando: 1968–1975
  • Norton Atlas: 1968
  • Norton P11 Ranger: 1968
  • Triumph T100
  • Triumph T120
  • Triumph T140 Bonneville
  • Triumph TR7RV Tiger 750
  • Triumph TR5T Trophy Trail / Adventurer

Compatibility with points ignition

The IGC-1006 can also be used with some original points ignition systems. A ballast resistor is required for:

  • Triumph T160
  • Norton Commando
