Classic Triple Ignition Mark 2

The Classic Triple Mark 2 is designed specifically for the three-cylinder engines used in the Triumph Trident, BSA Rocket 3 and Triumph Hurricane. It replaces the original points and mechanical advance system with a modern electronic ignition that is compact, reliable and requires no points or condenser maintenance.

The system has been developed and refined through many years of experience with classic motorcycle ignition systems. It provides accurate ignition timing and consistent operation while retaining the character of the original engine.

Easy installation and timing

The Classic Triple uses the original points-cover location, with no external ignition control box required. A built-in self-test function allows the ignition system to be checked before the engine is started. The LED timing indicator also makes checking and adjusting the ignition timing straightforward.

The system is designed to work with the original 12-volt electrical system and is suitable for both positive and negative earth/ground motorcycles.

Starting and running performance

Easy starting was one of the priorities in developing the Classic Triple. The ignition system provides a strong, consistent spark during starting and normal running, helping the engine start cleanly and run smoothly.

The electronic system also eliminates the wear and adjustment associated with mechanical points and the original contact breaker system.

Ignition coils

The Classic Triple is designed to work with suitable 12-volt ignition coils. For the best results, we recommend Tri-Spark high-performance coils matched to the requirements of the engine.

The ignition system is suitable for the original three-cylinder coil arrangement and can also be used with other suitable coil configurations. Please contact us if you are unsure which coils are appropriate for your motorcycle.

The system is designed as a direct replacement for the original points and mechanical advance components, while retaining the original appearance of the motorcycle as much as practical.

It is intended for the original three-cylinder engines and can be used with standard or modified engines, subject to the ignition and coil requirements.

Twin-plug and modified engines

If your engine has been modified, including twin-plug cylinder heads or other significant changes to the ignition system, please contact us before ordering. We can advise on the appropriate configuration.

Note: This system is not compatible with miniature coils.  See our Triple Flex ignition compatible with digital miniature coils.

Recommended accessories:

• 12V Tri-Spark high performance coils  (3 needed ,no ballast resistor required for cleaner installation); (IGC-1012)
• Spark plug leads (3 needed).   Right angle coil end (SPL-0020) or  Straight coil end (SPL-0010)
• Non resistor small spark plug caps (3 needed), (SPL-0070) or Resistor spark plug cap (SPL-0035)

Required accessories (for 6-volt coils):

• Ballast resistor (required when using 6-volt coils);  (60-4516)
• Spark plug leads (3 needed).   Right angle coil end (SPL-0020) or  Straight coil end (SPL-0010)
• Non resistor small spark plug caps (3 required), (SPL-0070) or Resistor spark plug cap (SPL-0035)

• Coil circuit resistance range: 3.0 to 5.0 Ohms (3.0 absolute minimum)

• Advance range: 24 degrees at crank (14 to 38 degrees BTDC)
• Fully Advanced: at 3500 RPM
• Idle stabilisation range: 500 to 1200 RPM
• Advancing timing range: 1200 to 3500 RPM
• Operating temperature range: -20 to 110 degrees Celsius
• Absolute maximum: 24 volts DC for 1 minute
• Maximum load dump voltage spike: 180 Volts DC for 50mS
• Air Gap (rotor to stator unit): 2.0mm +/- 0.6mm
• RPM range: 150 to 10000 RPM
• Safety - Coils are always off when engine stopped
• Ignition coil compatibility:
• Tri-Spark IGC-1012 (12 volt) coils are recommended 3.5 Ohm
• Primary resistance
• Note: 6 volt coils (typ. 1.8 ohm primary) may be used with a ballast
• resistor(1.6 Ohm). 4 volt coils are not recommended. Use of other than the recommended coils will damage the stator unit.
