Introducing the Tri-Spark Compass Ignition for the BMW Twins 1980 - 1996

Author: Tri-Spark   Date Posted:2 August 2022

We are pleased to announce a new addition to our Compass range of ignitions for the 1980 to 1996 BMW twins.  We now have ignitions suitable for the classic BMW twins ranging from 1970 to 1996.  This launches us into a new universe of classic bike enthusiasts, bike clubs and dealers!

To mark the occasion, we are making a limited number of these ignitions available at an INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL PRICE.  This is a genuine offer and will not be repeated.  Quantities are limited.

About Compass BMW Ignitions
These two ignitions are primarily the same in that they use the same sensor and control box but are different in small ways due to the changes BMW made to the points arrangement in 1980.

Both ignition kits share the same sensor, designed using high temperature rated components and built into a robust CNC machined aluminum housing and potted for protection from vibration.  This is an inductive sensor which is the industry standard these days due to its simplicity and robust components - basically a magnet and coil, and it just works so well.

The control box is generously rated to withstand the rigors of a motorcycle engine environment.  It can cope with high voltage spikes and surges and if something does go wrong the box is repairable - a rare thing these days.

Compass Ignition for BMW 1970 to 1979 (CS-0060)
This kit includes

  • a simple rotor to replace the auto advance unit
  • a pickup plate to replace the points plate
  • a small control box to trigger the ignition coils
  • 12 page installation instructions with color photos

It's compatible with the original Bosch ignition coils and all the connections plug straight in.

Compass Ignition for BMW 1980 to  1996 (CS-0065)

This kit includes all the same items listed above but the rotor and pickup are designed to fit inside the ignition can for both the points version (1980 to 1982) and the electronic version of the can from 1983 to 1996.  The two ignition cans are slightly different so we've made suitable hardware for both versions, avoiding fitting issues that existed with other makers' kits that required drilling extra holes in the can.

The timing curve of the Bosch electronic system is retained for compatibility.  The installation is largely plug in and the functionality of the electronic tachometer is retained as this is triggered by the ignition system.  It also includes a 12-Volt Dual Lead Coil.
