Tri-Spark Ignition Systems for Classic Triples: Technical Insights and Innovations

For those who ride and maintain the legendary Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3, it’s no secret that the original ignition system—three sets of contact points—presents a tuning challenge. With points that are notoriously difficult to set and prone to drifting out of tune, reliable performance is hard to sustain. That’s why electronic ignition has become a must-have upgrade for many triple owners. At Tri-Spark, we've spent years refining ignition systems to solve these issues while respecting the spirit of these iconic machines.

This article offers a technical breakdown of our two latest systems: the Classic Triple Ignition Mark 2 (Part No. TRI-0002) and the Triple Flex Ignition (Part No. TRI-0003). We'll unpack their differences, features, and coil compatibility so you can make the right choice for your bike.

The Classic Triple Ignition Mark 2 (TRI-0002)

The Classic Triple Ignition is a clean, compact solution that mounts directly in place of the original points plate. The updated Mark 2 version continues to offer:

  • Sequential Firing: Each cylinder fires in sequence, just like the original setup.

  • Self-contained Design: No separate black box required—all electronics are housed in the points cavity.

  • Compatible Coils: Recommended coils for the Classic Triple are 3 x 12V coils with 3Ω primary resistance. If using 6V coils, a ballast resistor must be added to bring the total resistance into the correct range (4.5Ω – 5Ω).

  • Maintenance-Free Operation: Once installed and timed, there are no contacts to adjust or clean.

What's New in the Mark 2?

  • Enhanced Hardware: We’ve updated the hardware, incorporating the latest advancements to ensure smoother and more consistent ignition performance. Whether you’re riding on highways or navigating tight corners, the Mark 2 delivers precise control.

  • Advanced Software: The software in the Mark 2 has also been upgraded to optimise ignition timing and responsiveness. You’ll experience improved throttle response, better fuel efficiency, and a smoother ride overall.

  • Longer Warranty: We stand by the quality and durability of the Tri-Spark Classic Triple Mark 2. To give you peace of mind, we’re offering a warranty of 5 years

This is an ideal upgrade for bikes that originally used mechanical points or those looking to keep a simple wiring layout with minimum modification.

The Triple Flex Ignition (TRI-0003)

New to the Tri-Spark range, the Triple Flex Ignition offers greater flexibility for custom setups and different coil configurations:

  • External Black Box: Houses the main control circuitry, allowing advanced features and fine control.

  • Flexible Coil Compatibility: Works with three 6V coils or three 12V coils. Also compatible with digital mini coils, offering a compact and modern solution for high-performance builds. Excellent for Rob North Triples with limited coil mounting space.

  • Versatile Mounting: With the brain of the system located in the black box, the pickup unit is small and fits neatly in the engine without the need for oversized points covers.

The Triple Flex is ideal for bikes that have been heavily modified, or for owners who prefer a separate black box or  looking to optimise ignition for performance and fuel efficiency.

Why Choose One Over the Other?

  • If you’re restoring a Trident or Rocket 3 to original condition and want minimal wiring, the Classic Triple Mark 2 is the better fit. It's simple, compact, and replicates the original firing order without external modules.

  • If you’re looking for different coil options with an external control box, the Triple Flex accommodates different coils and provides a modern ignition profile.

These modern alternatives offer greater reliability, easier maintenance, and significantly better performance.
